Carazol Nasal Spray

🔹 Indication

• Prevention and early treatment of viral respiratory infections
• Common cold (caused by rhinovirus, coronavirus, influenza virus)
• Supportive use in COVID-19 (mild cases, adjunct only)
• Reduces viral load in nasal cavity

🔹 Pharmacology

• iota-Carrageenan is a sulfated polysaccharide derived from red seaweed
• Works by:
  • Forming a protective barrier on nasal mucosa
  • Binding to viruses → prevents them from attaching to host cells
• Not systemically absorbed → acts locally in nasal passages
• Broad-spectrum antiviral (physical mechanism, not chemical killing)

🔹 Dosage

(Typical nasal spray form)

• Adults & children:
  • 1 spray in each nostril, 3–6 times daily
• Start as early as possible after symptom onset
• Duration: usually 5–7 days or as directed

🔹 Administration

• Intranasal use only
• Steps:
  1. Blow nose gently
  2. Insert nozzle into nostril
  3. Spray while breathing in lightly
  4. Repeat for other nostril
• Clean nozzle after use

🔹 Drug Interaction

• No significant systemic interactions reported
• Can be safely used with:
  • Antihistamines
  • Decongestants
  • Paracetamol (e.g., Paracetamol)
• Avoid using immediately with other nasal sprays (keep 15–20 min gap)

🔹 Contraindication

• Hypersensitivity to iota-Carrageenan or formulation components
• Severe nasal injury or recent nasal surgery (consult doctor)

🔹 Side Effects

Generally well tolerated:

• Mild nasal irritation
• Sneezing
• Dryness in nose
• Rare:
  • Allergic reaction (very uncommon)

🔹 Pregnancy & Lactation

• Considered safe due to no systemic absorption
• Can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding
• Still advisable to consult a doctor before use

🔹 Precaution & Warning

• For intranasal use only (do not swallow intentionally)
• Avoid touching nozzle tip to prevent contamination
• Not a substitute for antiviral drugs in severe infections
• If symptoms persist >7 days or worsen → seek medical advice
• Use cautiously in:
  • Chronic nasal conditions
  • Frequent nosebleeds

🔹 Storage Condition

• Store below 25°C
• Keep away from direct sunlight
• Do not freeze
• Keep out of reach of children
• Use within recommended period after opening
